Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz – The Red Shirts of Cartier Win Again!

The ‘Godfather of Polo’ Reto Gaudenzi, who is the man responsible for introducing the snow polo to the world and now is CEO and organiser extraordinaire of the greatest snow polo event on earth told us that, “God must be a polo player”. The almighty certainly must be a polo fan as not only has the ice been frozen to optimum depth, the snow has been crisp and plentiful, but also the sun has been warming the thousands of spectators gathered in the bustling Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz stands for the final day of thrilling snow polo.

The Final was an epic battle which reflected the three days of fierce challenges – as soon as the first ball was thrown in, the Cartier goal-scoring machines Dario Musso, Chris Hyde, Rommy Gianni and new Cartier teammate Juan Cruz Greguoli were out in force, notching up the initial goals needed against Maserati. As the teams thundered around the frozen lake in the first chukka, the boys in blue, Maserati, stuck to their ‘Red Devil’ adversaries like glue, desperately trying to keep the goal-scoring firepower at bay.

Greguoli was the first to convert his continued efforts on goal, an excellent example of the ease with which these high goal players convert their grass polo expertise to snow. Despite a goal-less first chukka, from halftime, Maserati were taking no prisoners – Hissam Ali Hyder raced up and down the field with Robert Strom and Gerardo Mazzini ably backing him up. In a great play, Strom dribbled through not one, nor two, but three Cartier players to gently place the ball through the posts, thus narrowing the gap between the scores to 3½-3 going into the final chukka. As the final chukka of the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz 2018 ticked by, Hyde suddenly became alive with polo fervour. Following a perfect penalty 4 goal, to put the scores to 4½-3 he raced in front of the tense crowd with his stick in the air, who responded with a roar of thunderous applause led by the Cartier Managing Director (Switzerland) Mrs Laurence Bourgeois.

With 1.41minutes on the clock, Maserati made one more attempt to even the scoreboard and with the successful goal it looked like they might be able to break through, but the clock had other ideas. Tick, tick, tick…and it was all over. The ‘Red Devils’ won The Cartier Trophy and with it the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz 2018 – the third consecutive win for Captain, Rommy Gianni and a monumental seventh win for ‘The Prof’ himself, Chris Hyde. The Cartier Trophy was presented by Mrs Laurence Bourgeois, Cartier Managing Director (Switzerland) and Mrs Kaethy Dobers, the Boutique Director of Cartier St. Moritz. The Most Valuable Player was awarded to Dario Musso, whilst the Polo Times Best Playing Pony rug was presented to Zedan, played by Musso. Unsurprisingly, the Best Playing Patron was presented to the Cartier Captain Rommy Gianni.

All that remains to be said, is, we can’t wait for the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz 2019, on 25, 26 & 27 January 2019!

Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup 2017

Jaeger-LeCoultre enjoys a rich history with polo, ever since the creation of the Reverso watch in 1931. The mythical story of the Reverso watch began in 1931 when a British army officer who had broken the glass of his watch during a polo match in India, raised the challenge to create a model sufficiently robust to survive a polo match unscathed. This challenge, successfully accomplished by the Manufacture at the time, led to the creation of the Reverso watch with a swivelling case to protect the dial. Through the Manufacture’s passion for the sport of Polo, a watchmaking icon was born.

This year, the top ten teams are entering the 2017 Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup for the British Open Polo Championship, the most coveted prize in high goal professional polo outside of Argentina. The Draw to decide matchplay in the opening league phase took place in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s flagship boutique at 13 Old Bond Street, London.

In addition to its technical aspects and the beauty of its movement, the Reverso watch embodies first and foremount a style – namely, the Art Deco. This trend with its decidedly modern connotations, was expressed by a revolutionary aesthetic language capable of uniting art and the avant-garde. More than merely a style, this movement embodies a philosophy that aspired to create a utopian world in which reason merged with splendour, modernity with tradition, and form was born of function.

The Reverso watch, originally launched in 1931, has been reinvented for eighty-six years while staying true to its original design principles. It is much more than a watch. It measures time, and it preserves its history. The Reverso is unique in the world: in one watch, there are two faces through a patented swiveling case. Thus, in a single gesture, the model reveals another face. Generations have come and gone, styles have evolved, yet the Reverso remains true to itself, to its aesthetic codes, to its inimitable swivel. The back of the Reverso is an invitation to personalize. In the Manufacture’s dedicated workshop, highly skilled artisans can reproduce a favorite painting, a miniature portrait, initials, a poem… Some stories deserve to be captured forever.

The Spanish Boot Company

The  Spanish Boot Company brings together town and country style with their collection of boots, accessories and clothing.

Where it all began …

Emma the founder, was working for a summer at a stable yard in the Algarve, Portugal, she received so many compliments from many British clients for a pair of Spanish Riding Boots she had purchased locally. This prompted her to make a small detour on her way home to Valverde del Camino, southern Spain to pick up a few pairs of these fantastic boots.

On her return in October 2002 the enthusiastic welcome to the boots allowed SRB Valverde to be born.

Emma’s overall aim is to provide the British market with good quality Spanish merchandise at affordable prices. She has already expanded into stocking a selection of styles and plan to increase her range where possible. Customer service is high on the list of priorities whilst establishing SRB Valverde and they also offer a made to measure service.

Emma decided to change the company name to The Spanish Boot Company mainly because it is a lot easier to remember than SRB Valverde!

The tradition of Champagne Lanson’s exclusive tie-ups with the summer’s key sporting and social calendar events has been confirmed for 2017 with its sponsorship of Chestertons Polo in the Park and Champagne Lanson’s 40th associated year with The Championships, Wimbledon.

CHESTERTONS POLO IN THE PARK Champagne Lanson’s ‘The Perfect Start to… Summer’ campaign will begin with its exclusive Champagne sponsorship of Chestertons Polo in the Park on 9th June 2017. This will be Champagne Lanson’s third year with one of the most hotly anticipated fixtures on London’s sporting and social calendars. Champagne Lanson will once again be recreating its largest outdoor Champagne Garden, overlooking the field of play at Hurlingham Park – a glamorous focal point at last year’s event. In 2017, Champagne Lanson plans to theme its sponsored areas predominantly white to highlight its White Label cuvée (one of the first Champagnes designed to also work with flavour enhancers such as a zest of an orange or lemon, a slice of strawberry, or a sprig of fresh mint).

It will have its Magnum, Methuselah and 75cl formats of its White Label cuvée as a theme across its now legendary Champagne Garden; as well as Magnum and 75cl bottles of its popular Rose Label (which remains the UK’s No.1 non-vintage Brut rosé Champagne).

Combining world-class sport, a host of London’s most exciting Polo players, restaurants and Europe’s longest outdoor Champagne bar, Chestertons Polo in the Park is the perfect setting for polo fans and London’s social society to kick-off the summer season in style.

Paul Beavis, Managing Director, UK & International says: “As a brand that embodies excellence, innovation and celebrates achievements, Champagne Lanson continues to be proud of its association with Chestertons Polo in the Park. This exciting event has become one of the most hotly anticipated fixtures and is the most fun you and your friends or family members can have in central London.”

Rory Heron, Managing Director, Sportgate International says: “Over the three action- packed days, six teams representing cities from all over the globe will battle to be crowned the victors of Chestertons Polo in the Park 2017. We were proud to be the first event of Champagne Lanson’s #ThePerfectStart to… summer campaign. Champagne Lanson’s choice to lead with their Rose Label across the site led to record Champagne sales inside their incredible pink Champagne Garden last year; and we know Lanson’s White Label cuvée plans for this year will resonate with our guests, as it fits perfectly with the theme of Polo.”

U.S. Open Polo Championship final

Valiente wins U.S. Open Championship

The final was exciting from the second the ball left the umpire’s hand to begin the game. Orchard Hill’s Polito Pieres took the throw-in and found Facundo Pieres on the end of a pass. Facundo bounced a shot in off the goal post to open the scoring less than 30 seconds into the game. After both teams traded penalty goals with Facundo converting a penalty 4 for Orchard Hill and Diego Cavanagh converting a penalty 2 for Valiente, 10-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso drove downfield with time expiring. Shooting at goal from approximately 60 yards out, the ball sailed over the inside edge of the goal post, narrowly missing a goal by inches. The smallest of margins was determining the outcome of the game between two highly skilled and well-mounted teams.

Facundo Pieres
Diego Cavanagh – Facundo Pieres
The tense game continued as Diego Cavanagh took advantage of early fouls from Orchard Hill to score the first 5 Valiente goals (4 penalty goals, 1 field goal). Meanwhile Orchard Hill was controlling open play as Polito Pieres scored his first goal of the game while Facundo Pieres scored his third goal to maintain the 4-4 tie after two chukkers.
Orchard Hill exploded in the third chukker, outscoring Valiente 5-2. Orchard Hill converted 5 of 7 shot attempts as they looked to seize control of the game and gain a lead over a tough Valiente team that was set on making a comeback. The emergence of Polito Pieres for Orchard Hill was a huge factor. He had his best game of the season, highlighted by a first half that saw him score 4 of his 6 goals and win 6 of his game-leading 11 throw-ins on the day to give Orchard Hill a 9-6 edge heading into halftime.
Adolfo Cambiaso
Valiente showed why they were the highest-scoring team of the 2017 season to start the second half as Cambiaso scored off the first throw-in to cut the deficit to two goals.
Cambiaso wasn’t done there, as Matias Torres Zavaleta hit a perfect backhand to set him up for a breakaway and put a lot of pressure on Orchard Hill as their 3-goal lead quickly shrunk to 1 goal. Just as it seemed Valiente would keep scoring, Polito Pieres snuck up behind Cambiaso and stole the ball, springing himself on a breakaway to give some momentum back to Orchard Hill.
Adolfo Cambiaso and Diego Cavanagh
Valiente hit their stride and won the fifth chukker 2-0 to tie the game at 11. After Cambiaso gave Valiente their first lead of the game with his fifth goal of the game,
Cavanagh had a penalty 3 opportunity to extend the lead to 2 with less than three minutes remaining. Surprisingly, he did not convert, a rare miss for the 73% penalty shooter. Polito Pieres answered by taking a Facundo backhand and hit a cut shot from 40 yards out that just found its way inside the goal post to tie the game.
Seconds before the final horn Facundo Pieres caught Cavanagh on a turn near the Valiente goal. After a reversed call and a challenge, Orchard Hill had a penalty 4 opportunity. The ball sailed over the goalpost just wide, throwing the game into overtime.
Best Playing Pony 2017 played by Adolfo Cambiaso

After six chukkers Orchard Hill had shot a very efficient 11 of 15 (73%) from the field, while winning the throw-in battle 20-9, possibly giving them a slight edge heading into overtime. Both teams had their chances to end the game, with Facundo and Polito Pieres both making runs at goal for Orchard Hill while Cambiaso missed a goal by inches on a shot from 40 yards out. After the ball went out of play approximately 100 yards from the Orchard Hill goal, Cavanagh broke out of the back end of the line-up and ran to goal, putting the ball through for his seventh goal of the game to hand Valiente the 13-12 victory and the 2017 U.S. Open Polo Championship title.
